    Induction Programme for New Colleagues


HKBU is renowned for its dedication in providing an excellent and holistic education experience for its students. In HKBU’s Vision 2020 Strategic Themes (, quality teaching and learning is again given top priority. With the new 4-year degree commencing in September 2012, and two cohorts of freshmen joining the University, it is important to re-emphasise our focus on Whole Person Education.

This is a brand new staff development programme approved for provision to new colleagues by the University Senate in June 2012. The primary objective of which is to help new comers get familiar with the learning and teaching environment of the local tertiary education sector, and in particular the learning and teaching culture of HKBU.

Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of the induction programme, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe pertinent aspects of the teaching and learning culture at HKBU;
  2. Recognise the characteristics of HKBU students that relate to their learning and deploy appropriate motivational techniques to help students learn more effectively;
  3. Identify the eTools available at HKBU and deploy appropriate ones for the enhancement of teaching and learning.

Session Details

Session 1 – Monday, 3 September 2012

Title: Teaching and Learning @ HKBU

Abstract: With the full adoption of Outcomes-based Teaching and Learning (OBTL), teaching and learning at HKBU emphasizes on the creation of a more learner-centered learning environment that effectively encourage students’ active engagement, and the provision of timely feedback to motivate them to work towards a high standard. The 4-year curriculum with a specifically designed General Education programme further exemplifies the University’s resolve to educate students to lead and excel in the 21st Century as global citizens. As such, it is of paramount importance to assist new colleagues joining HKBU to transition effectively and efficiently to the teaching and learning culture of the University.

This session will introduce the teaching and learning culture of HKBU to participants, highlighting the adoption of OBTL to help our students learn better. Further explanations/discussion on pertinent matters, like the University-wide Assessment Policy and the General Education programme will also be provided.

Session 2 – Tuesday, 4 September 2012

Title: Knowing Your Students and Strategies to Foster Motivation in Learning

Abstract: To effectively choose teaching methods and foster motivation to learn within a classroom, we must know something about our audience. Your students will come from very diverse backgrounds and they may have different learning needs. Knowing both who your students are and how they learn is the starting point for teaching at its best. It also helps to find out how to motivate your students to learn and what you can do to structure a class (e.g. refining lectures, teaching and learning activities, and providing formative feedback, etc.) which engages your students in learning.

In this session, we will share with you HKBU’s student profiles, which include students’ level of academic preparation and achievement, socioeconomic background, parental education background, employment statistics, etc. We will also explore certain well researched principles about how student learn and strategies for fostering student motivation in learning.

Session 3 – Wednesday, 5 September 2012

Title: eTools for Teaching and Learning at HKBU

Abstract: Generation Y students are known as “digital natives”, so using technology to motivate them to learn or help them learn more effectively has become part and parcel of teaching and learning today. At HKBU, the Moodle platform has been in use for some time. To better assist colleagues to collect evidence showing students’ achievement of learning outcomes, the Blackboard platform is newly launched for parallel running allowing for a smooth transition. In this session, we shall showcase the various tools and features on our eLearning platforms and explore how they can be used and leveraged as effective tools in creating a conducive environment to assist teaching and learning. Participants are encouraged to bring their own computers and mobile (e.g. iOS, Android, and Blackberry) devices.
