As a new student at HKBU, you are bound to have questions. We design the student orientation activities around you, helping to uncover the answers to your questions and transit successfully to university study and get acquainted with our campus and online resources for eLearning.
This summer’s orientation activities will be moving online to ensure the health and safety of our University community.
Getting Ready for the New Semester
As online teaching and learning gaining more importance at higher education these days, our University is bringing a paradigm shift to the teaching curriculum and assessment. Students are strongly encouraged to go through the following materials for them to learn effectively in an online/mixed mode environment.
Assessment shall not be limited to evaluate your understanding of the subject knowledge, but to include your capabilities of applying a repertoire of knowledge and skills to solve real-world problems throughout the learning process. In line with HKBU's recent paradigm to curriculum and assessment, new forms of assessment have been adopted in some of our courses. Relevant details including the assessment arrangements in a course will be provided by your teachers in the beginning of the class.

Your Learning Development at HKBU
(A) Learning Analytics for Your Studies
With the aim of understanding the expectations and actual experiences during your time at HKBU, as well as enabling you to reflect on your own academic progress, two learning analytics initiatives, namely the Student Learning Experience Questionnaires and the University Academic Profile, have been put in place at HKBU.
Student Learning Experience Questionnaires (SLEQ)
As a student, it would be useful for YOU to think of learning as an ongoing process in which your expectations and your actual experiences can fuel your development as you progress in your study and life at HKBU. To assist YOU as well as the University understand the experiences of your study, university life and how good you are with regard to the Graduate Attributes of the University, the Student Learning Experience Questionnaires (SLEQ) will be conducted at different points along the timeline of your stay at HKBU:

Before the commencement of your study programme

At the end of your first year of study

Your responses will help you understand your own expectations and experiences. More importantly, your participation in the Student Learning Experience Questionnaires will provide important data for the University to continuously improve its learning and teaching initiatives. Our timely support in both academic and personal growth could also be rendered to YOU if necessary.
To help you trace and track your own completion towards the exercise, after completing each Student Learning Experience Questionnaire, you will receive your own individual report on your progress as compared with the previous one, as well as against the progress of your fellow students. The report will provide you with useful information about your education at HKBU.
University Academic Profile
Throughout your studies at HKBU, YOU will be encouraged to reflect, in a variety of ways, on your academic progress. The University Academic Profile (UAP) is here to provide you with an opportunity to monitor your academic progress and performance over your years spent at the University. With your own Academic Profile, you can reflect on your learning progress any time and think about the specific areas that you want to further improve and develop as you look ahead for your future career path when getting closer to graduation.
The UAP is conducted several times during the course of study at HKBU:
New students will complete the UAP before they kick off their academic journey at the University, to provide some baseline information.
As students progress in their second year of study, they will complete the UAP again within the course of “UCPN1005 - Art of Persuasion”, to provide interim data.
Towards the end of the study in their final year, students will complete the UAP for the last time to help assess their readiness for career.
(B) Academic Integrity and Ethics Awareness Programme (AIE-AP)
HKBU’s Policy on Academic Integrity
At the heart of a university education, there must be an emphasis on students developing academic integrity and ethics, essential proper conduct for their personal growth and future professional careers.
Academic integrity is a cornerstone of HKBU’s Whole Person Education ethos and HKBU takes academic integrity very seriously. As one of the HKBU’s University Life Programme requirements, the Academic Integrity and Ethics Awareness Programme is specifically designed to reinforce and stress the obligations for all students to uphold the highest standard of academic integrity at HKBU.
There are two major components in the AIE-AP, conducted at the start of your study at HKBU to signify that you are expected to behave ethically with integrity not just at HKBU, but for the rest of your live as you become a life-long member of the HKBU community. The two major components are:
All undergraduate students are expected to complete the AIE Awareness Programme as soon as practicable as they are essential and helpful for studying at HKBU.
Academic Integrity Online tutorial (AIOT)
HKBU offers AIOT as an introduction in promoting academic integrity by increasing your awareness of the issues involved. Using pertinent cases as examples, each of the six modules in AIOT provides information and strategies that can be applied to avoid committing academic misconduct unintentionally.
If you fail to complete the above three steps before the end of your 2nd semester, you may be barred from accessing the course grades, or enrolling for courses.

Outcomes-Based Teaching and Learning (OBTL) at HKBU
“What can I achieve after taking the courses?”
Outcomes-Based Teaching and Learning (OBTL) is primarily concerned with focusing on what you are actually learning and how well you have learnt it.OBTL is a pedagogical process, which as its name suggests, focuses on the achievement of certain specified results.
The course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs), the Teaching and Learning Activities (TLAs), and the Assessment Methods (AMs) are constructively aligned at the course level.
Courses in any given programme at HKBU are further aligned to their respective Programme Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs), which will facilitate the students’ attainment of the HKBU Graduate Attributes (GAs).
To implement OBTL effectively, HKBU adopted Criterion-Referenced Assessment (CRA) in the Academic Year 2012/2013. Here are two important concepts of CRA:
Use of objective criteria.
No pre-set distribution of grades.

Normally, students will receive marked/graded assessments with appropriate feedback no later than three weeks after the submission deadline.
Assessment rubrics will be used to assess student works.

HKBU provides state-of-the-art technology platforms, including Moodle and Zoom, to support digital learning. Through the provision of these services, and led by experienced faculty and staff, HKBU strives to deliver interactive, convenient and engaging learning experiences for our students.
