Abstract:

The unexpected class suspension in Semester 1 AY2019/20 resulted from social activities has drawn our attention to the needs of harnessing online teaching, learning and assessment. The University is expected to have a big increase in the use of both synchronous and asynchronous online teaching and assessment in the next semester. To better prepare colleagues for the transition, a series of TALES workshops will be delivered to familiarise colleagues with different e-tools that facilitate online learning.    
This workshop focuses on the use of the online meeting tool, ZOOM in teaching, learning and assessment. Three experienced ZOOM users from various departments will share their experience of conducting interactive online classes with the platform, tips on keeping the students as engaged as attending a face-to-face lesson, and things to observe in designing assessment when conducting teaching and learning online.

Abstract:

Dr Tushar Chaudhuri, a recipient of the 2019 HKBU President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Teaching, has won the University Grants Committee (UGC) Teaching Award in 2019 in recognition of his outstanding teaching performance. As the first HKBU teacher to receive this honour, we are delighted to have invited Dr Chaudhuri to share his insights in diversifying and internationalising students’ learning experience through innovative teaching designs. The shining examples of Dr Chaudhuri’s pedagogy include engaging his students to learn outside the classroom by making use of cutting-edge technology and enhancing language learning with a tele-collaborative project that connects HKBU students with overseas German-speaking peers. In addition to the creative curriculum design, Dr Chaudhuri will also share how he incorporated the 3C-teaching approach—Connect, Collaborate and Construct—into both face-to-face and online teaching to facilitate the development of global citizenship.

Abstract:

Pedagogic approaches that foster partnership help create supportive learning relationships between teachers, students and even members of the public. The formation of sustainable and reciprocal learning communities can also enhance the development of generic and subject-specific attributes (Crawford, Horsley, Hagyard, & Derricot, 2015; Pauli, Raymond-Barker, & Worrell, 2016). Aspiring to support colleagues in delivering the best student experience as stipulated in the University’s Institutional Strategic Plan (ISP), the CHTL, CISL, and GEO jointly developed this workshop series to explore the multiple facets of teaching and learning partnership at HKBU. Facilitators from diverse disciplines and departments will share how engaging experiential learning, service-learning, and interdisciplinary learning experience can be delivered by making innovative collaborations with students, academics, alumni, secondary schools, and NGOs.

Dr Chow Yiu Fai, prominent lyricist and Associate Professor from Humanities and Creative Writing, will share his experience in engaging students in his course “Chinese Song Lyric Writing” as active learners and contributors. Dr Chow’s students interviewed socially marginalized figures and unsung heroes and wrote lyrics about them, and Dr Chow empowered these students by cultivating their leadership and letting them plan and organize two concerts in which they performed their own songs and invited the interviewees to attend. The concerts were well attended with 800 audiences from HKBU and the general public and received positive feedback from the media, showing the enormous success of the “students as partners” model. In this session, Dr Chow will share with participants his expertise in developing creative partnerships with students and his passion in exploring the boundless possibilities of teaching and learning.

The new General Education (GE) curriculum is a timely response to the growing call for interdisciplinary studies to meet the dynamic needs of todays’ students as global citizens in a highly interconnected world. The course Seeing the World from Artistic and Scientific Perspectives, a Level 2 Interdisciplinary Thematic Course (Science, Technology and Society) offered by Professor Zhu and Mr Kingsley Ng, is one of the notable GE courses designed and delivered through cross-faculty partnership. Professor Zhu and Mr Kingsley Ng will share their vision and experience in crossing the traditional faculty line and bringing together the art and science, as well as the gains and challenges encountered in course design and delivery, and ways to address them. A talk not to be missed by colleagues who are interested in the fast-growing interdisciplinary field in both teaching and research on teaching and learning.

Abstract:

On 29 January 2020, Professor Kara Chan, Associate Dean, School of Communication offered a 45-minute online workshop, which she named it “Elearning 101”. The main purpose of the workshop was to assist COMM colleagues to set up online classes when face-to-face classes were suspended, so that the students could continue learning. The response was astounding, over 90 colleagues joined the workshop via ZOOM, with excellent feedback and gratitude to Professor Chan.

To help other non-COMM colleagues, Professor Chan has kindly given us permission to offer further online workshops with her materials. Three identical workshops as scheduled above will be conducted via ZOOM. By the end of workshop, you should be able to:

• add ZOOM in one of your Moodle courses
• set up recurrent ZOOM meetings for classes commencing in February 2020
• take questions from participants in the ZOOM classroom environment
• share screens in the ZOOM environment
• add Echo360 in one of your Moodle courses

Abstract:

With the suspension of face-to-face classes still in place, we continue to offer support to colleagues to adopt eLearning to provide learning opportunities for students. Three Zoom TALES workshops, eLearning 101 were conducted last week to assist colleagues set up online classes. The pedagogical examples provided by Professor Kara Chan, Associate Dean, School of Communication were particularly useful to colleagues.    

Working with Associate Deans and academic colleagues of other Faculties* to incorporate more discipline-specific examples for teaching online, another three workshops as scheduled above will be conducted using Zoom. By the end of workshop, you should be able to:

• set up recurrent zoom meetings in Moodle courseroom
• take a question from a participant in the zoom classroom environment
• share screens at the zoom environment
• set up breakout sessions in Zoom for students to discuss in groups

Abstract:

The eLearning workshops conducted online using ZOOM in the past couple of weeks highlighted the importance of teachers being cognizant with Moodle. As the Learning Management System (LMS) of the University, other eLearning tools like ZOOM, Echo360, Qualtrics and Turnitin, etc. are integrated into Moodle for operational efficiency and ease of use. Moreover, with functions such as discussion forum, quiz and assignment collection, using Moodle effectively becomes important for teachers. 

To remind colleagues on the useful functions in Moodle and how to work with ZOOM inside Moodle, two workshops as scheduled above will be conducted via ZOOM. By the end of workshop, you should be able to:

• Activate your Moodle courseroom
• Upload teaching materials into Moodle
• Set up quizzes and assignments in Moodle
• Set up discussion forums in Moodle
• Set up recurrent ZOOM meetings in Moodle courseroom

Abstract:

With the increasing demand of conducting online teaching to continue students’ quality learning at the University during this period of no face-to-face class, aspects of assessing student learning like interactivity, collaborative learning and collective construction of knowledge need to be managed differently online to help students meet the designated learning outcomes.    

We are delighted to have invited academic colleagues from different Faculties* to share their hands-on experience with discipline-specific examples on how to switch their well-used formative and summative assessment methods online to assess their students’ performance. Formative assessment methods (like discussion, quiz (short answer, multiple choice), paper, game, etc.) together with the pedagogical approach of blended learning allow teachers and students with timely and frequent feedback on achieving the designated course intended learning outcomes in class. Meanwhile, summative assessment methods (like open book exams, projects, portfolios, presentations, case study, video-making, experience based practicum, reflective journal etc.) allow teachers to assign student grades. The main issue here is, of course, making judgement based on students’ achievement online.

This series of five workshops as scheduled above will be conducted using ZOOM. By the end of workshop, you should be able to:

• Identify relevant digital assessment methods using different e-pedagogies as part of the formative assessment in class.
• Relate appropriate digital assessment methods as part of the summative assessment to make judgement on students’ online learning achievement.

Abstract:

Followed by a series of helpful and informative sharing workshops on online teaching and digital assessment to assess students’ online learning performance, the purpose of the workshop is to demonstrate how to grade student assignment online with Turnitin in Moodle. In the workshop, you will get familiar with the online grading features available in Turnitin to facilitate your online teaching and assessment.

By the end of workshop, you should be able to:

• Setup Turnitin assignment in Moodle and the grading rubrics in Turnitin;
• Grade Turnitin assignment by using GradeMark with online feedback.

With the understanding of last TALES workshop on “Grading Turnitin Assignment in Moodle”, we are happy to have invited two language teachers from the Language Centre to share their real-life examples on grading assignments in Turnitin from teachers’ perspective. In the workshop, you will gather more practical tips on grading in Turnitin with its various functions like rubrics, online comments/feedback, QuickMarks etc. to further facilitate your online teaching and assessment.

Abstract:

There are lots of inspiring stories to tell how dedicated teachers at HKBU enhance student learning experience through their exemplary teaching practices. Every year, we are honoured to have invited some of our excellent teachers in the TALES workshop series to share ways to stimulate student learning, design innovative teaching and learning activities and assessment method to assess student achievements.

In this session, two awardees, Dr Archimedes Guerra and Ms Vicky Man, of our President’s Awards for Outstanding Performance in Teaching 2020 will share their teaching pedagogies and tips on engaging student learning. They both share a common practice of using eLearning to engage student learning inside and outside classroom teaching.

The use of video conferencing software not only benefit teachers on conducting online lectures and tutorials, but it can also facilitate teachers with skill-based teaching online.

We are happy to have invited two teachers, Mr Ekkehard Altenburger & Dr Sobel Chan from the Academy of Visual Arts and the Academy of Film respectively to share their good practices on using video conferencing software to conduct online skill-based classes like Scripting/Creative Writing, Clay Mould/Bronze Sculpture Making, in a highly interactive and engaging learning environment. They will also share their innovative ways of setting online assessment to assess student learning performance.

In the workshop, you will be inspired with more practical/innovative tips on using video conferencing software for conducting online skill-based sessions to further facilitate your online teaching and assessment.

Abstract:

End of semester examinations are coming, some have already started. In view of the recent extra security measures for setting online examinations on ZOOM, the purpose of this workshop is to share some tips/suggestions of setting ZOOM online examinations via Moodle. Practical tips include creating password protected online exams, making use of waiting room function, restricting your session to authenticated users only, having teaching assistants as co-hosts, etc.

Abstract:

Having practised online teaching and learning via different software this semester, we have learned many innovative online pedagogies and assessment methods to enhance student learning. With the many uncertainties ahead of us that some students may or may not be able to come back to the campus to attend classes physically, a mixed mode of face-to-face and online teaching may become predominant in the new academic year.

We are delighted to have invited three teachers to share their experience of conducting and preparing ‘mixed mode teaching’ (i.e. some students attend the class physically together with some attending virtually) to engage students in interactive activities and to assess student learning performance. They will also share some pros and cons of conducting ‘mixed mode teaching’.

In this session, our speakers will inspire you with some practical tips on conducting ‘mixed mode teaching’ to further facilitate your teaching and assessment in the days ahead.
