Induction Programme 2021
HKBU is renowned for its dedication in providing an excellent and holistic education experience for its students. Being the top strategic priority of providing “Best Student Experience” in our Institutional Strategic Plan 2018-2028 (http://strategicplan2018-2028.hkbu.edu.hk/en/strategic1.html) quality teaching and learning is again given top priority, re-emphasising our focus on Whole Person Education.
This Induction Programme is specifically designed for new academic and teaching staff members joining HKBU. The primary objective of the Programme is to help new colleagues get familiar with the learning and teaching environment and culture of HKBU.

Intended Learning Outcomes
At the end of the Induction Programme, participants will be able to:
- Describe pertinent aspects of the teaching and learning culture at HKBU;
- Recognise the characteristics of HKBU students that relate to their learning and deploy appropriate motivational techniques to help students learn more effectively;
- Identify the resources (including pedagogical approaches, assessment methods and policies, and eTools) available at HKBU and deploy appropriate ones for the enhancement of teaching and learning.
Completion of the Induction Programme (IP) is mandatory for new academic/teaching colleagues up to the rank of Assistant Professor. The Programme is highly recommended to other new colleagues as well, as it will give an overview of the teaching and learning culture and the pedagogies commonly adopted at HKBU. The following workshops will be scheduled for August 2021:

Induction Workshop Details
Overview
Following the experience of adopting online/mixed-mode teaching to ensure student learning quality in the past year or so during the pandemic, colleagues come to realize the importance of shifting their teaching practices from emphasizing summative assessment to formative assessment with the digital technology support. To better prepare colleagues for face-to-face/online/mixed-mode teaching with the design of authentic assessment methods for the new semester, a series of workshops will be delivered to familiar colleagues with different types of e-tools and authentic assessment methods. Different means of digital technology facilitating student learning will be introduced.

Abstract:
In this session, colleagues will share with you the overview of teaching, learning and assessment policy and practice at the University. Representatives from different teaching and learning offices like Academic Registry, Office of Student Affairs, General Education Office, Centre for Innovative Service-Learning and International Office etc. will share their roles of supporting teachers/students to facilitate quality teaching and learning at the University.

Abstract:
Assessment plays an important role in the process of learning which provides data on measuring the progress of student learning. In view of this, the University has launched a revised assessment policy to provide colleagues with the basic requirements for the design, delivery and management of assessment and related activities. We are delighted to have invited experienced speakers to share the important role of assessment at the University. Apart from sharing the purpose of the revised assessment policy of HKBU, speakers will give an overview of the revised assessment policy with examples of implementing effective assessment methods to enhance student learning quality. Examples of analyzing and interpreting the assessment data with the view of introducing instructional changes will also be covered.
In addition, participants will experience an online learning trail regarding the academic integrity and ethic of sharing online course recording.
By the end of this worksop, participants will be able to:

- Describe ways of designing effective assessment methods for enhancing student learning quality

Abstract:
The use of mobile applications to enhance teaching and learning is becoming a common practice in higher education these days. The Apps Resource Centre (ARC) is an HKBU in-house development team dedicated to developing educational mobile apps. In this session, Professor Christopher Keyes, Director of ARC, will introduce the Centre and the apps development process. Two experienced teachers, Dr Gray Ho and Professor Lian-Hee Wee, who have collaborated with ARC in creating their own mobile apps, will share their experience of applying mobile learning in their own teaching practices.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Describe the process of developing mobile applications for mobile learning;
- Identify useful teaching strategies with the use of mobile applications to enhance teaching and learning.

Abstract:
Facilitating small group learning is different from conducting traditional lecturing, where the role of the teacher should be a “guide on the side,” encouraging and helping students on translating classroom knowledge into application i.e. to take ownership of the learning session. Meanwhile, the role of the teacher for traditional lecturing is often a “sage on the stage,” scheduling the learning content with a lesson plan, preparing related teaching and learning activities of the session. Students in seminars, small groups, and in some laboratory settings, however, will expect the teacher to facilitate learning by providing goals and objectives, cases or scenarios, prompts or questions, and question extensions, rather than straight lecturing.
In the workshop, Dr Tran, winner of President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Teaching, Dr Kim and Dr Mendez, winners of President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Early Career Teaching will share tips of facilitating small groups learning in their respective subject teaching. They will also address some questions like Why small group teaching? What to do while students are in discussion groups? What is teacher’s role during small group sessions?
By the end of this workshop, participants should be able to:
- Describe teacher’s role and the importance of facilitating small group sessions;
- Apply some practical tips in facilitating students in discussion groups.

Winning students
Abstract:
The “Discipline × Healthy Lifestyle” project is an initiative sponsored by Jiangsu Hong Kong Cultural Association; developed by the CHTL in AY2018/19 to engage HKBU students in promoting healthy lifestyles to younger students using their subject knowledge. AY2020/21 was the second time that CHTL organized this event. The project attracted over 300 sub-degree, undergraduate and postgraduate students spanning across 6 academic disciplines to work with their teachers as partners for creating innovative learning activities (online/face-to-face) in teams. Participating students went to 12 local secondary schools to deliver their subject related activities with over 1300 secondary school students involved during semester 2, AY2020/21 and submitted activity journals for reflection. This workshop invites outstanding student participants in the project who demonstrated exemplarily the spirit of positive peer influence and “learning through teaching” in their award-winning activities for sharing. Specifically, 3 teachers with their winning students will recount the trajectories of success, from in-class training, on-site/online delivery, to self-evaluation of the learning outcomes.

Abstract:
To most research postgraduate (RPg) students, the few years of research studies and independent learning experience in the University is of vital importance to their future and career. To this end, HKBU endeavours to assure that our RPg students receive the best student experience and research supervision.
In this workshop, we have invited two experienced academic supervisors and winner of the President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Research Supervision, to share their good practices of supervising postgraduate researchers. Apart from going through the regulation of supervising RPg students, our facilitators will talk through the ways they adopted different strategies to personalise their coaching approaches to individual students. Also, they will elaborate on how they guide their students at different stages, from proposal writing to career planning after project completion, to make the most out of their research projects, and attain high-achieving learning goals.
By the end of this workshop, participants should be able to:
- Describe the latest regulation of supervising RPg students at HKBU;
- Identify effective approaches of supervising research students to achieve their learning goals.
